Just had a trans build right before last part summer. 2 trips to track and 500 miles on the street and it let lose in second gear in the burnout box.i

was using super bettle main shaft modified by berg. running 3:88 ring pinion.so i am thinking of buying a FTC main shaft can a few people give

me some idea's on them or any other that think will do me better. and i was not running slicks on it . but i do play on it, the street tires i was using.

where just baking the crap out of them. I know erco got some main shaft, any use any of there before?? how are they?

I broke 2 welded 3.78x2.25 shafts in my street car, switched to an erco 3.78x2.21 and never had a problem and i used to run slicks all the time on it. (n/t) (Greg T) (16-Mar-2000 23:55:56)

Also erco has some ratios like 4.11x2.47 and 4.25x2.54 that would be good with that 3.88 (n/t) (Greg T) (17-Mar-2000 00:03:33)

Re: Ercos main shafts are the choice of many trans builders although I do not run one in my trans i still have a 3.78 2.25 welded mainshaft with alot of runs and miles with no problems (n/t)

i have used erco gears for years.from stock transmissions to 600hp turbo buggies.i cant say ive never seen a failure but ive definitely seen far less

failure than ftc and especially so called,"race parts".1st and 2nd gear is a 3 piece set.the mainshaft and 1st and 2nd idlers(on the pinion).so we all

have 3 piece mainshaft sets.

I've seen some trans that blew 2nd gear that were not put together very well. I don't claim to be a trans builder but when i saw 2 or 3 2nds blown,

we got interested. What we saw was the builder some how got 2nd and 1st not lined up very well, maybe 1/2 the 2nd gear teeth were not engaged,

ie the teeth weren't lined up making the gears take the full loading on about 1/2 the tooth face. Almost instant breakage resulted.

Just something to look at. In my 5spd. I have a three pc. main shaft made up of a 3.78 SB 1st, 2.25 Auto suck 2nd, and then the stretch for the 5th. I

have been merciless for years to it, someday I know I will have to upgrade it.

You weren't able to break first, but you broke second? This tells me there may have been a flaw (crack) in second, or as Tom said it wasn't

together right.

Darren ran a 9 tooth for years in his turbo'd 66 without breaking it. 8" Goodyear slicks, 10.15 @ 133mph, and 1.40 60 fts. The stock 9 tooth can

hold up.

every one else covered mostbut the thought that comes to my head is, did you notice any vibration during your burn out, specificly wheel hop?
