There are different widths of our favorite type of Firestone tires. For some reason they all say 6 X 26 x 15. There is a round patch after

the size which tells the real size. If the round patch is blank, then you have a true 6" slick (actual 5.75") A "W" means you have 7" slicks

(6.75"). And finally an "A" is the 8.5" (8.25") tire. Anyone know of more letter codes?

As for Caldwell re-apping them, no problemo.

Yes,there is a BIG difference between re-caps and radials. On Darren's first launch with the Caldwell's, he cleaned off first gear.

Apparently he forgot he had a 10 tooth first.

Just like Bruce said.

On the street if you had 30 lbs in both the slick and a radial not a big improvement with the recap.

At the strip when you go down to 15 lbs with the slick recap then the wrinkle wall feature and the softer re cap tread compound will

work much better than a radial. Check the Topline VW site for the picture of Jim Kaforski's blue car at DD# (Wheels not as high on the

back page Hot VWs teaser for next months DD3 coverage) launching front wheels in the air with capped slicks, tough to do that with

radials.

Do you guys put tubes in your slicks?

Special ones or standards?

What size for my 26-6 15 M&H?

Does somebody ever put screws to hold the slick on the wheel?

Thank you.

The reason for rim screws... (TG) (27-Feb-01 23:18:23)

For those of you that don't run tubes, do you find that you have to use bead sealer on the rim. I've got at set of 6" Stones on centerlines(no tubes), and can't keep air in them for more than a day. (n/t) (Trevor Pippin) (28-Feb-01 00:17:04)

I havent yet but i will be adding them to my phoenix slicks because they leak down after 4 or 5 days. My M&H recaped slicks do not have a leak down problem so they are still tubeless.

as for screws, i have had my M&h down to 9 lbs and no movement (i did mark them to check) probably not to necessary unless you have gobs of hp and running low tire pressure. I have talked to the guys at ems and even on Chihiro's super street car they get the tire press down to 10 and still havent used screws. Although for piece of mind, if you are going to run a tube, you might hate to see the stem get ripped off because of a slipping tire. with out tubes, dont worry about it.

i do in 1 set and dont in the others

Use screws if you don't use tubes. The difference is (theoretically) a tenth of a second faster for no tube.

I run screws in my 'stones, and the only bad thing is the tires go flat sooner than if you use tubes (a couple hours, if you don't "slime" them).

Is that if you are running tubes and the tire moves on the rim, it will rip the valve stem out of the tube. If you can run your tires tubeless (I do) you will not need rim screws, but you will be putting air in your tires a lot more often. By not running tubes you end up with less rotating and unsprung weight, and the tires will usually wrinkle and hook better too. The M/H slicks I have been running seem to hold their air really well, it takes over a month for them to leak down. Just my .02
