No screen and a cow magnet attached to the sump extension is what Berg recommends and how I have mine....Works for me, but there may be a better way.. (n/t) (Craig T/Crash) (04-Jan-01 20:16:43)

Without..>>>More (Ollie Frey) (04-Jan-01 20:20:40)

I don't have one either but........An offroad buddy of mine ( you met him at the party) lost a whole motor once this way once. A piece of stock rocker spring (warpy washer) fell into the sump and got sucked up. Ended up wedged in the gears. Broke the oil pump shaft and lost oil pressure on the highway. ( no idiot light in his buggy,,,That idiot.. : ) ). Locked up the motor solid....Food for thought.... (n/t) (Ohio Tom) (04-Jan-01 20:59:27)

Use a cow magnet if you leave the screen out. Even the one Berg sells is only around $7. Works great to find flat cam parts too, dammit! (n/t) (George Wells) (04-Jan-01 21:29:42) Re: If you're running 7-8000 rpm I'd leave it out for a 6000 rpm motor I'd leave it in, I'm sure there's other opinions though.... (n/t) (tim v.) I remember that guy tom, Your case is ready!!! Hey tim I don't think i'll be reving my engine that high...Just trying to figure out what is best way to go with this engine. I was thinking it would offer some added protection. Is the thinking that the oil flows slower? Tom are you going to have another engine building party? (n/t) (Nick/Ohio) (04-Jan-01 21:19:53)

I'm hearing that!!! I gotta put this 1904cc together - but still have alot of parts to buy. How about your engine Nick? (n/t) (Richard Sedoris) (04-Jan-01 22:04:57) Gene Berg says you don't need it (n/t) (04-Jan-01 21:35:36)

Hey Rich....How you been...Well I traded my 1776 back to Pat for parts and cash! Went to a Engle 120 cam and Big heads with st. cut gears. All my engine tin is at the bogy shop getting paint. Got my berg linkage and temp. probe still waiting on my kymco header and muffler. Still need Tom to reshape my manifolds. Can't wait to get together in the spring!!! (n/t) (Nick/Ohio) (04-Jan-01 22:19:22)

Damn that thing is gonna be sweet....It's still a little too cold for a garage party. Kerosene heater won't keep up when it's 15deg outside. I'm gonna be building my long block in the basement starting next week.....Nick, Drop off those manafold and heads any time..... (n/t) (Ohio Tom) (04-Jan-01 23:40:55)

I run the screen in my kadron engine. I top out at about 6200. I have the Berg fullflow filter setup, and it filters everything after the pump. I too had an oil pump get chewed to pieces by a wavey washer. The gears looked as though they spent time in the mouth of a rottweiler with diamond teeth. Other production cars such as Honda, Nissan, ect....turn 7000-8000 rpms and still retain the screen. I have noticed that some of the aftermarket sump screens out there have a coarser mesh(bigger screen windows). This is what I run. (n/t) (John Pagnanelli ) (05-Jan-01 01:41:25)

Re: I left the sump screen off my last motor and the pickup tube mounting tab broke and it rotated up into the cam and now I am rebuilding it again. This also happened to my COW magnet equiped motor . I`ll NEVER leave out the screen again. >>> ( Mark H) (05-Jan-01 12:32:36)

Mark I welded another tab on my pick-up tube. I think that when extended and with a magnet the vibration will cause the pick-up to break loose. This can lead to other problems such as yours but also becoming so loose that the pump will suck air. I've seen it happen! (n/t) (Don Bulitta) (05-Jan-01 15:55:10)

Thanks guys: Thats why I put it out you can always get some good feedback. Leaving it in! (n/t) (Nick/Ohio) (05-Jan-01 13:17:31)

Re: Sump screen (Dave Rhoads) (05-Jan-01 16:13:44)

Dave makes an excellent point - if it isn't ferrous, a magnet won't touch it. Also, for those of you doing magnets, why not mount them on the inside of the stamped steel sump plate instead of clamping them onto the pickup tube? (n/t) (george brown) (05-Jan-01 16:40:24)

Because my sump plate is aluminum. (n/t) (Matt Harris) (05-Jan-01 18:29:15)

Re: Hey, do U guys know why they`re called COW magnets??? ( Mark H) (06-Jan-01 01:49:44)

Because they feed them to cows so they will crap out all the bailing wire and odd metal stuff they eat. Wheres my million $? (n/t) (Marty) (06-Jan-01 03:56:15)

----------------

Dave Kawell even goes as far as to cut out part of the baffel above the oil pickup so that the oil can return back into the sump as quickly as possible and get picked back up as quickly as possible. I did this in my 2333cc drag race motor without a screen, and I left the screen out of my street motor, HP1 is more than sufficient. I know opinions vary, but screens can be bad news when it comes to flow dynamics.

First of all there is no reaso not to run a screen. There are no benifits to leaving it out.

With out the screen the longer pickup tube for the deep sump vibrates when the engine runs and braeks the mounting tab. On the motor with the Cow magnet I got lucky because the magnet was heavy enough to hold the tube from rotating up into the cam like the other motor. I`m an putting that motor back together right now and evey time I think about how I could be driving it instead of fixing it I get mad. I had to turn my friggen Scat crank to 10 under and put a nother cam and lifters in it to mention a few things. Just run the screen and you won`t have to worry about such things. Good luck with your motor,

Mark H
