Transmission HELP Thursday, 27-Apr-2000 01:49:10 Message: 209.52.116.145 writes: Well, I'm about to order up my transmission for my notchback but I'm in a dilema.. Sam @ Rancho Trans told me to go with a 3.88 ring and pinion w/4.11 1st,2.46 2nd,1.74 3rd and a 1.31 4th since I have about 200lbs on most beetles but I've had some friends tell me that gearings too much.I know it's a bit low but Rancho said with the weight difference I may shear a 3.78 1st mainshaft. I plan to run this on the street in town mostly with the occasional run down the track. I know I'm not going to have a highway cruiser but I can deal with that.My engine is a 2332cc with Denham 44 x 37.5mm street elims, FK8,1.4 rockers, 48IDA's w/42mm venturis, approx 9.5 to 1 and a 1 3/4 merged.I'm also going to run recapped slicks as well. Sorry about the novel but I need some help before I make an expensive mistake Thanks Bruce Bruce M

Since Bill is rarely on line I'll answer for him.

Bill drove his car to Pomona and ran some 12 second passes a couple weeks before the Classic, he also plans to run it at Palmdale

July 8th.

The Der Transaxle Berg 5 built by Jim Kaforski (714 630 7292) has been flawless and Bill is enjoying his freeway driving much more

now. In fact at the DKPIII NHRA cruise the other month Bill's 70mph pace was a little fast for the close ratio 4 speed guys, so Jose

and Ben decided to have Berg 5 speeds installed this summer too.

I can understand how you may have overlooking Bill's car, there were so many fast and finished Cal Looks at the Classic guess the

DKPIII cars just blended in.

I need some advice on selecting a r&p and close 3rd/4th combo. The car is a '67 cal-look, complete interior, 2 liter, etc. I do not drive

long distance and frequently race @ the local strip. I'm looking to lower my e.t. over the stock gearbox and need some "seat of the

pants" opinions on what works best on the street/strip.

The best all around street and strip seems to be 3.88 R&P Stock 1st 2nd & 1.48 3rd with 1.08 4th this still gives highway drivability

without pushing motor too hard. But of cource more info is needed to figure your proper ratio.ex motor power range & how tall are

your tires?

hope this helps some.

budget is the factor here.you said no long distances,so budget minded folks would run 4.37,3.78 1st 1.58 3rd and 1.21 4th,awesome 1/4

mile gears.guys that want to spend the money up front will use the 3.88 and aftermarket 1st thru 4th gears.if you think a 4.37 isnt

strong,i use one,my car is full weight ,runs 12.10to date, and ive probably got 60 passes on this r/p.
