Timing Tuesday, 30-Jan-01 23:47:24 24.69.48.15 writes: The other day I needed to set up a lady's timing in her 71 bus after I installed a 009 distributor.I couldn't remember what to set it at static so I could be in the ball park. A buddy said to give it 10 ATDC.This would give me a total of 32 ATDC. When I went to my own bus to check it so I could copy the setting I came up with around 21 ATDC(static). I have a 009 with pertronics and hers has points. Whats going on? What am I doing wrong? I did get a hold of a timing gun....but with no degree pulley I did my best.I did have an old Castrol paper degree wheel and white painted the 32 ATDC mark and set it to this. What do you set the car to at static for start up with a new distributor and what do you set it at degree wise at what RPM. Hope you can help... Panel Panel

Marc, I think you meant Btdc? if you set it at 10-11 deegrees BTDC, you should be close, if not, you need to check the amount of movement your advance mechanism has, if yours is less, you might be sticking, and not getting full advance. (n/t) (bugly) (31-Jan-01 00:28:37) First, you cannot static set a pertronix (or like module). Must be done with a timing light. 2nd, 10deg. BTDC static or idle gives about 32 BTDC total. Only vacuum adv. dist are timed ATDC....Best to set the timing at full adv. with a timing light and motor revved up enough to give full adv.... (n/t) (Ohio Tom) (31-Jan-01 00:28:58) Yes, you can set static timing with a Petronix or like component - hook up your timing light to #1 and slowly turn over the engine until the light flashes on #1, then check your reading. Of course, you should follow up with a dynamic setting using the light... The stock 71 bus pully has it's timing notch to the left of the round bottom dip, beacuse with the stock dist. the timing is stactic timed ATDT ( After top dead center) when you install the 009 you need to file a new ststic groove to the right of the dip, same distance, thats the BTDC side,( before top dead center) and the 009 needs to be set ststic at 8/10 degrees "Before top dead center" !! Just measure the disatance from the dip (TDC) to the notch, file a new notch to the right of the dip, you now have the proper static timing mark ! Good Luck !!
