How do I remove this swing axle ??? Sunday, 24-Sep-00 02:09:23 216.119.47.58 writes: I broke the drivers side axle (Sac bug-o-rama), it was really easy to remove from the transmission. Now I am trying to remove the other axle. Do I need to get a six inch puller and remove the wheel bearing first and then remove the inner side plate and compression clamp? Will the axle housing come off after the wheel bearing is off? I have purchased a new tranny and I'm considering having a shop put the new axles on??? Is there any significant trick to putting new axles on??? Im in no hurry and I plan on putting new bearings, axles, nuts, boots, ect... on as I put it back together, will I run into problems trying to put bearings on my axles with out a press? Is there any other unforseen problems that will occur? Should I stop now and just take it to a shop? Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks in advance... Michael D Meyer

You need to pull the bearing. You can use a puller on the axle housing to pull both together. I use a craftsman two finger puller. Makes it easy. The a giant pair of snap ring pleirs for the snap ring that holds in the thrust washer, fulcrums and axle. Be patient, it's not an easy job in the car (n/t) (Mike Lawless) (24-Sep-00 11:48:27)

Re: Re: How do I remove this swing axle ???...Thanks Mike, I will be out purchasing a puller on Monday. The tranny is out of the car so it should be a little easier. Should I have the new bearings pressed on or can I do the gentle hammer a pipe on a washer trick? (n/t) (24-Sep-00 23:09:58)

Re: You may pull the axles and leave the tubes attached via the bearings but you will need to pull them to reattach the axles in diff and pay attention to the spec in bently manual for fulcrum to axle blade clearance. The right size pipe will do just fine(clean pipe) with a reasonable amount of persuation.GL. (n/t) (Gary Cooper) (25-Sep-00 12:13:46)

Re: Thanks Gary. It should be a fun weekend! I guess if I'm going to be dumping the clutch on the track there is a price to pay every once in a while. (n/t) (27-Sep-00 00:10:01)
