The Ford Mustang was initially based on the compact Falcon platform, but it created a new genre known as the "pony car", which still exists today. Ford souped up the early Mustangs with a 271 h.p. 289 c.i. V8 engine; later there were options for a 390 motor, and a Mustang GT500 with a Carroll Shelby-tuned 428 c.i. engine in it. Ford went on to set a number of performance standards with the Mustang 428 Cobra Jet, Boss 302, etc., and you can still buy a new Mustang today.
